1. Halloween

With great set pieces, the movie moves forward with no mercy, at the deliberate speed of Myers’ walk. The soundtrack is superb.

Did you miss me?

2. A Quiet Place

A well directed and well acted exploration of family values and monstruous perils.

Great performance by Millicent Simmonds

3. Revenge

The plot is simple but the movie is shocking and significant, despite also being somehow problematic. It deals with societal issues in a terrifying way.

A dish best served cold

4. Mandy

Nicholas Cage versus drug-fueled Lovecraftian motorbikers. What else do you need to know?

The titular Mandy

5. Hereditary

Fantastic movie, with great actors, and solid writing. It is a slow burn but it burns, indeed. It stays with you.

Creepy dollhouses and a perfect Toni Collette

6. Upgrade

Unreasonably graphic on its violence, this low budget movie makes you think of the good old 90s.

"I can't control myself"

7. Overlord

Fun, insane, and ultra-violent — particularly for a commercial movie — it is an effective mechanism to deliver gore and one-liners.

The crazy-ass-rapist-on-steroids Wafner

8. The Endless

A low budget indie with a lot of character, weirdness, and unexpected twists and turns.

UFO death cult? Count me in

9. Cam

A suspenseful thriller with a supernatural element and clever feminist subtexts.

Mirror, mirror on the screen

10. The Ritual

Stylish and tense, the movie is also a reflection on fraught masculinity in our complicated times.

uh-oh!

Edit:

Honorable mention:

Let the Corpses Tan

Chaos, confusion, violence, bullets, great leather outfits, golden showers, art, experimentalism, past, present, and lots of other stuff get mixed in mesmerizing imagery and farcical, over the top acting.

Elina Löwensohn: awesome!
