The Best EPs and Singles of 2020
Here we go! The first list of 2020!
1. Father John Misty — To S./To R.
To S. made me cry, and that makes it a great song in my book. FJM also released another EP worth checking this year, with a version of Leonard Cohen’s Anthem.
2. Le Ren — Morning and Melancholia
With one of the best songs I have listened to in the last few years, Love Can’t Be the Only Reason to stay, “Morning and Melancholia” establishes Le Ren as one of the best new artists around.
3. Dirty Projectors — Windows Open
Dirty Projectors released a number of EPs this year, but I think this is the best one of them. Bittersweet and easy to listen to.
4. The Fiery Furnaces — Down at So and So on Somewhere
After a long wait since 2009, The Fiery Furnaces came out with this great and unexpected single.
5. Juan Wauters — Más Canciones de la Onda
Juan Wauters is always a fun listen. After releasing La Onda de Juan Pablo last year, he put out this collection of outtakes. Muy bonito y amusing.
6. Bully — About a Girl/Turn to Hate
Bully released a full album this year but, before that, Alicia Bognanno recorded these two covers. A product of the pandemic, I think. Turn to Hate is a fantastic version of Orville Peck’s original.
7. Spector — Extended Play
Spector is intense, fun, and a bit nostalgic. I Won’t Wait, the opener, is the perfect introduction to the band.
8. Orville Peck — Show Pony
After the release of 2019 Pony, Orville Peck became something of a cultural reference. Show Pony doubles down on his country and queer stylings. It also brings a duet with Shania Twain.
9. CMAT — Another Day (kfc)
Three singles in, CMAT is an artist you need to know. Another Day is a funny, though heartbreaking tale of an unfortunate break-up. Country, pop, rock, from Dublin to your heart.
10. Sinead O’Brien — Drowning in Blessings
Very confident, a bit odd, rich, deep, and almost literary, this is an amazing EP by the Irish punk poet Sinead O’Brien.
